Psycho Educational Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Groups

The Anxiety and Depression Center has four, ongoing cognitive behavioral groups.

One group is a Social Anxiety Group, a second group is a Mind Over Mood Group a third group is a Mindfulness and Compassion Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Group and the fourth group is a Coping Skills For Teens Group.

Each track of groups will consist of 12 group sessions and an individual pre-group screening session. The groups will focus on the development of CBT skills that have shown to be effective. The Social Anxiety Group and the Mind Over Mood Group will focus on cognitive restructuring including identifying, evaluating and altering anxious or depressive thoughts, exposure, response prevention, acceptance of anxious and depressive feelings and thoughts, increasing distress tolerance and the development of anxiety and depression management strategies. Additionally, the groups will teach participants identify behaviors associated with their anxiety and depression and help them develop the skills and strategies to overcome these behaviors.

The Mindfulness and Compassion Based CBT Group will teach participants self compassion and to distance themselves from their thoughts, sensations, perceptions and emotions. The Mindfulness and Compassion Based Group Therapy will focus on the application of distancing and decentering strategies that have been shown to be especially helpful for people with mood disorders. People who suffer from mood problems often lack self-compassion and one aspect of the group will be reducing the negative self-judging/self-critical internal voice.

These cognitive behavioral therapy groups therapy offer a cost-effective intervention that can make CBT available to people who may not be able to afford a full course of individual therapy. Individualized treatment in the context of a group setting can be a powerful therapeutic experience. The groups will provide patients with a safe and supportive environment that will allow them to share their experiences, to gain immediate feedback from peers to test the accuracy of the thoughts, and to strategically and systematically experiment with new behaviors and strategies that can be the foundation for durable change.

One individual session is required to determine if the group is a correct "fit" for the client. Each group session will involve discussion, skill building and experiential learning. We will be generating pre-and post data as well as assessing an individual progress throughout the groups.
